Hyundai ELEXIO Confirmed for Australia

Hyundai Australia has confirmed it will introduce an all-new electric SUV called ELEXIO, with local sales set to begin in Q1 2026.

Positioned between KONA Electric and IONIQ 5, ELEXIO expands Hyundai’s growing EV portfolio with a mid-size option aimed squarely at families and everyday drivers looking for space, range and value — without stepping into premium pricing territory.

One Grade, Clear Intent

ELEXIO will launch in Australia as a single Elite trim, priced at $59,990 drive-away, simplifying the buying experience while offering a strong level of standard equipment.

Power comes from a 160kW / 310Nm electric motor driving the front wheels, paired with a substantial 88kWh battery. Hyundai claims a WLTP driving range of up to 546km, positioning ELEXIO as a practical long-distance EV for Australian conditions.

Built on Hyundai’s 400V E-GMP platform, ELEXIO supports DC fast charging from 10 to 80 per cent in as little as 38 minutes, making it well suited to both urban use and longer road trips.

Designed as a Family-First EV

Hyundai describes ELEXIO as a clean-sheet EV design, inside and out. Externally, it adopts a smooth, minimalist silhouette with layered horizontal design elements at both the front and rear, giving it a wide, confident SUV stance.

Five exterior colours will be offered:

  • Crystal White (standard)

  • Medium Grey

  • Pebble Blue

  • Dragon Red

  • Phantom Black

Inside, the cabin leans heavily into space, simplicity and usability. A leather-appointed interior is standard, available in Obsidian Black or Dove Grey, with highlights including:

Mazda unveils All-Electric Mazda CX-6e

Mazda Australia has confirmed it will expand its battery-electric lineup with the arrival of the all-new Mazda CX-6e, an all-electric crossover SUV scheduled to join the local range in 2026.

Making its global debut at the Brussels Motor Show in January 2026, the CX-6e represents Mazda’s next step into electrification — one that’s designed to feel unmistakably Mazda, rather than simply another EV entrant.

Electric, But Still Jinba-Ittai

The CX-6e adopts Mazda’s latest “FUTURE + SOUL x MODERN” Kodo design philosophy, blending sculpted proportions and clean surfacing with modern electric architecture. It’s a more progressive evolution of Mazda’s Soul of Motion language, but one that still prioritises harmony between car and driver.

Mazda says the CX-6e has been developed to deliver its signature Jinba-Ittai driving experience, now reinterpreted for a fully electric drivetrain — focusing on balance, responsiveness and intuitive control rather than headline figures alone.

A Milestone for Mazda Australia

Mazda Australia Managing Director Vinesh Bhindi described the CX-6e’s local confirmation as a significant moment for the brand.

“Confirming the Mazda CX-6e for the Australian market is a monumental moment for Mazda Australia,” Bhindi said.
“It adds yet another compelling option for our customers and further strengthens our multi-solution approach.

“This is not just another EV — it’s a Mazda through and through.”

According to Mazda, the CX-6e’s bold design, craftsmanship and driving dynamics are intended to reassure loyal customers that electrification doesn’t mean sacrificing brand identity.

Part of Mazda’s Broader EV Strategy

Following the recent confirmation of the Mazda 6e, the CX-6e becomes the second fully electric Mazda developed in collaboration with Chongqing Changan Automobile to be locked in for the Australian market.

The move reflects Mazda’s growing multi-solution electrification strategy, offering a mix of internal combustion, hybrid and fully electric vehicles to meet changing customer expectations — rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all approach.

The Big Picture

With the CX-6e, Mazda is making it clear that its electric future won’t abandon the qualities that have defined the brand for decades. Instead, it’s aiming to translate Zoom-Zoom into a new era — quietly, confidently, and with a strong focus on how the car feels behind the wheel.

More local specification details for the Mazda CX-6e will be confirmed closer to its Australian arrival in 2026.

BMW M Neue Klasse: Electric, But Still Built for the Racetrack

BMW M has confirmed that from 2027, its next generation of high-performance vehicles will arrive in fully electric form, marking a defining moment for the brand. Known as the BMW M Neue Klasse, the upcoming models aim to translate BMW M’s long-standing ethos — Born on the racetrack. Made for the streets — into the electric era.

According to Franciscus van Meel, the goal is nothing less than setting a new benchmark.

“With the latest generation of Neue Klasse technology, we are taking the BMW M driving experience to a new level,” van Meel said.
“Our next-generation models will deliver outstanding, racetrack-ready driving dynamics for everyday use.”

Electric, But Unmistakably M

BMW M is adamant that electrification won’t dilute what makes an M car special. Instead, the fully electric drivetrain is being positioned as a new performance enabler — combining long range, high charging capability via 800-volt architecture, and advanced energy recuperation with genuine circuit capability.

At the heart of the Neue Klasse M platform is a new centrally controlled, individual wheel drive architecture, designed to dramatically expand both performance and safety limits. Each wheel can be controlled independently, opening up a level of precision not possible with traditional drivetrains.

The ‘Heart of Joy’ and the Superbrain Era

Underpinning the leap in dynamics is BMW’s new central control and electronics architecture, built around four high-performance computers, or “Superbrains”. One of these — dubbed the ‘Heart of Joy’ — is dedicated entirely to driving dynamics.

By unifying control of power delivery, traction, braking and stability systems, BMW M claims faster data processing, sharper responses and greater headroom for future software upgrades. In simple terms, it’s designed to make electric M cars feel more alive, more adjustable and more engaging.

BMW M eDrive: Four Motors, One Focus

The BMW M eDrive system has been developed specifically for high-performance use and is based on the sixth-generation Neue Klasse technology. Each wheel is driven by its own electric motor, delivering true torque vectoring at all four corners.

Two drive units — one on each axle — house four motors in total, combining the benefits of rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive in a single system. Crucially, the front axle can be fully decoupled, allowing the car to operate as a rear-drive M machine when conditions allow — improving efficiency, range and driving purity.

Torque and braking forces are managed seamlessly between the electric motors and braking system, enabling maximum traction, precise power delivery and energy recuperation right up to the limit.

Sound, Feel and Engagement Still Matter

To maintain the emotional connection that defines BMW M, the Neue Klasse models will feature M-specific driving modes, simulated gear shifts, and a newly developed electric soundscape. These elements are designed to give drivers tangible feedback and character — ensuring the experience isn’t reduced to silent speed alone.

BMW M claims the electric drive units used here are the most powerful it has ever installed in a production vehicle, with extremely high power density and precise individual wheel control.

High-Performance Battery Built for Track and Road

The Neue Klasse M models will use a high-voltage battery exceeding 100kWh of usable energy, specifically adapted for high-performance demands. Using BMW’s “Design to Power” philosophy, the Gen6 cylindrical cells, cooling system and battery management electronics have all been optimised for repeated high-load use.

The battery housing also serves as a structural component of the vehicle, contributing to overall rigidity and improved handling response. Combined with class-leading recuperation performance, BMW says the setup delivers both strong peak output and rapid charging capability.

Lightweight Innovation Goes Natural

Weight reduction remains a core focus. For the first time, BMW M will introduce natural fibre composite materials into its electric high-performance models. Developed through years of motorsport testing, the material offers similar characteristics to carbon fibre while reducing CO₂e emissions by approximately 40 per cent.

It’s another signal that BMW M sees sustainability not as a compromise — but as an engineering challenge.

The Big Picture

BMW M’s Neue Klasse represents a philosophical shift as much as a technical one. Electric power is no longer being framed as an alternative — but as the next evolution of high-performance driving.

If BMW M delivers on its promises, the Neue Klasse could redefine what an electric performance car feels like — not just how fast it goes.

Nissan QASHQAI Goes All-In on e-POWER

Nissan Australia has confirmed pricing and specifications for the MY26 QASHQAI, arriving in early 2026 with a clear message: this popular small SUV is now e-POWER only.

For the first time, the entire QASHQAI range will be powered exclusively by Nissan’s latest e-POWER electrified system, delivering EV-like driving refinement without the need to plug in — and notably, featuring key powertrain components manufactured right here in Australia.

Originally launched locally in 2007 as the Dualis, the QASHQAI has long been a cornerstone of the small SUV segment. For 2026, it arrives in its most efficient, refined and technologically advanced form yet, as Nissan doubles down on its “hybrid reinvented” strategy.

Key MY26 QASHQAI Highlights

  • All-electrified e-POWER lineup

  • Improved fuel economy: 4.1L/100km combined (down from 4.8L/100km)

  • Reduced CO₂ emissions: 92g/km (17.8% improvement)

  • 5.6dB quieter cabin, delivering near-EV refinement

  • +10kW Sport Mode boost for sharper response

  • New 5-in-1 e-POWER powertrain, with Australian-made aluminium components

  • New ST-L e-POWER entry grade from $45,640

  • Enhanced Digital Around View Monitor with 3D views

  • NVES-focused emissions improvements

e-POWER: Hybrid, Re-Engineered

Unlike conventional hybrids, Nissan’s e-POWER system drives the wheels exclusively via an electric motor. A compact 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine acts solely as a generator, producing electricity on demand.

The result is instant throttle response, smooth power delivery and quiet operation — without the range anxiety or charging infrastructure considerations of a full EV.

The e-POWER advantage:

  • 100% electric motor drive

  • No plug-in required

  • Refuel anywhere

  • Instant acceleration with no gear changes

  • Regenerative braking to recover energy

New-Generation e-POWER: More Efficient, More Refined

The MY26 QASHQAI introduces Nissan’s latest 5-in-1 modular e-POWER system, integrating the electric motor, generator, inverter, increaser and reducer into a single compact unit. This reduces weight, complexity and energy losses — while improving overall efficiency and refinement.

It’s paired with a redesigned 1.5-litre turbocharged engine featuring Nissan’s proprietary STARC combustion technology, achieving an impressive 42% thermal efficiency — a key contributor to the QASHQAI’s improved economy, lower emissions and enhanced performance.

Proven Long-Distance Capability

Nissan recently demonstrated the system’s real-world efficiency when UK engineers completed the Land’s End to John O’Groats drive — more than 1,300km — on a single tank of fuel.

Closer to home, that translates to a Melbourne-to-Coffs Harbour run without refuelling — a strong reminder that efficiency doesn’t come at the expense of usability.

Australian Engineering, Global Impact

A standout element of the MY26 QASHQAI is its Australian contribution. The new 5-in-1 e-POWER system features high-pressure cast aluminium components engineered and manufactured at Nissan Casting Australia Plant (NCAP) in Dandenong South, Victoria.

NCAP serves as the global sole supplier for these components, meaning every MY26 QASHQAI e-POWER sold worldwide carries Australian-made technology — complete with the iconic kangaroo symbol.

Nissan Oceania Managing Director Andrew Humberstone said the move highlights Australia’s ongoing role in Nissan’s global engineering network.

“QASHQAI delivers the real-world efficiency of e-POWER in a right-sized package that’s been optimised across multiple fronts,” he said.
“With locally produced componentry at its core, it’s more Australian than ever.”

With its innovative 2.5 T-GDi Hybrid system, newly available Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, and Stay Mode for powering the cabin while parked, the all-new Palisade represents the most advanced and luxurious interpretation of Hyundai’s family SUV yet.

Design – Exterior

The all-new Palisade evolves its bold design DNA into a more sophisticated, commanding presence.
A shorter front overhang, upright windscreen, extended wheelbase, and lengthened rear section contribute to stronger proportions and more interior space, while the vertical LED DRLs and silver-coated hidden headlights create an unmistakable flagship identity.

A raised, straight beltline, sculpted wheel arches, and three-dimensional character lines add visual strength, accentuated by semi-gloss chrome D-pillar detailing and integrated bridge-type roof rails.

At the rear, vertical taillights echo the front light signature, joined by a clean, wide bumper and refined skid plate — a look that strikes the balance between urban sophistication and weekend adventure.

Completing the stance are 21-inch Calligraphy alloy wheels, exclusive to this range-topping variant.

Interior & Technology

Inside, the Palisade Hybrid feels more boutique lounge than family hauler. Drawing inspiration from premium furniture design, Hyundai’s designers have created a cabin that exudes warmth, precision, and space.

A new panoramic curved display seamlessly merges a 12.3-inch digital cluster with a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, presented within a clean horizontal dashboard layout that enhances the feeling of width. Beneath it sits a tactile centre fascia combining physical controls with touch inputs, and a 12-inch head-up display projects key data directly into the driver’s line of sight.

The redesigned three-spoke steering wheel, column-type gear selector, and island-style centre console elevate ergonomics and storage. Cupholders, USB-C ports, and wireless charging are all thoughtfully integrated, while the absence of a conventional gear lever frees up generous usable space.

Seating is available in 8-seat or 7-seat (captain’s chair) configurations, both featuring Hyundai’s Relaxation Comfort Seats — designed to create a near-zero-gravity posture for deep rest when stationary. The Ergo Motion Driver’s Seat uses adaptive air pockets for tailored support, while power-operated third-row seats can slide, recline, and fold flat via convenient luggage-area controls.

Key Interior Highlights

  • Front & Second-Row Relaxation Comfort Seats with adjustable tilt and recline

  • One-Touch Walk-In Access for easy third-row entry

  • Increased Cabin Dimensions with best-in-class second- and third-row legroom

  • Cargo Space: 348 L behind the third row, expanding to 729 L when folded

Sumptuous materials, intuitive technology, and exquisite detailing make the all-new Palisade Hybrid a true benchmark for Hyundai’s large-SUV craftsmanship.

Powertrain & Performance

At the heart of the all-new Palisade lies Hyundai’s next-generation 2.5-litre Turbo Hybrid powertrain, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. This innovative setup outperforms the previous 3.8-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel options, delivering greater power, torque, and fuel efficiency — all with a smoother, more EV-like drive feel.

Unlike traditional hybrids that rely on a single electric motor for both propulsion and regeneration, Hyundai’s dual-motor hybrid system assigns one motor to energy recuperation and the other exclusively to driving the wheels. The result? Sharper response, refined transitions, and superb efficiency.

Together, the hybrid engine and electric motors create an experience that feels genuinely electrified — quiet, confident, and remarkably efficient. Regenerative braking extends all-electric driving capability, while intelligent systems such as Smart Regenerative Braking automatically adjust energy recovery based on traffic conditions.

Beyond the daily commute, Palisade Hybrid retains real-world practicality with a 2,000 kg braked towing capacity, combining family versatility with genuine long-distance confidence.

e-Motion Drive & Dynamic Technologies

Hyundai’s e-Motion Drive system takes hybrid performance to new heights, actively managing weight transfer, pitch, and balance for a smoother, more composed drive.

Two key modes define its character:

  • e-Comfort Drive – Uses electric-motor counter-torques to smooth out rebound impacts over speed bumps and reduce pitch under acceleration or braking, creating a plush, stable ride.

  • e-Dynamic Drive – Enhances agility through functions like Evasive Handling Assist (e-EHA), e-Handling for sharper corner entry and exit, and Dynamic Torque Vectoring Control (e-DTVC), which fine-tunes motor torque during turns for greater precision.

Further refinement comes from Crosswind Stability Control, which compensates for strong side winds using brake and steering interventions — ensuring Palisade remains calm and stable, even at highway speeds.

Chassis & Ride Comfort

The all-new Palisade’s suspension has been meticulously tuned to balance comfort, control, and refinement. As part of Hyundai’s global development program, engineers from Korea collaborated directly with the Hyundai Motor Company Australia team to deliver a bespoke local damper tune — specifically optimised for the diverse and challenging road conditions unique to Australia.

A lightweight strut-type front suspension with a reinforcing strut ring enhances steering precision, while the multi-link rear setup features passive self-levelling dampers to maintain composure under heavy loads.

The introduction of rack-mounted electric power steering (R-MDPS) with a revised ratio sharpens response, while a 0.31 drag coefficient — achieved through aerodynamic detailing like underbody panels, active air flaps, and a tapered boat-tail body shape — improves efficiency and high-speed stability.

Enhanced NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) insulation, acoustic glass, and larger sound-deadening pads create a serene in-cabin atmosphere, particularly for rear passengers.

Safety & SmartSense

The Palisade Hybrid represents Hyundai’s most advanced safety evolution yet. Its body structure now uses a higher percentage of hot-stamped high-strength steel, improving rigidity and crash performance.

A total of eight airbags, including a driver’s knee airbag and front centre side airbag, form part of a comprehensive safety package supported by Hyundai SmartSense™ technology.

Key SmartSense Features:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 2 (FCA 2) – Detects vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists, offering braking support in complex situations like junction turning and lane changes.

  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) and Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM) – Provide visual alerts and live side-camera feeds to expand visibility.

  • Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2) and Lane Following Assist 2 (LFA 2) – Maintain distance, lane centring, and adaptive steering for relaxed highway travel.

  • Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC) – Adjusts speed automatically when approaching bends or junctions.

  • Safe Exit Assist (SEA) – Prevents rear doors from opening into oncoming traffic when vehicles are approaching.

  • Driver Monitoring System – Detects drowsiness or distraction using in-cabin facial recognition.

Together, these technologies deliver intelligent, proactive safety — designed to protect families before, during, and after impact.

Convenience, Connectivity & Everyday Luxury

Beyond its electrified performance, the Palisade Hybrid is defined by effortless everyday usability and luxury-class technology.

Digital Key 2 allows owners to lock, unlock, and start the vehicle using their smartphone or smartwatch, while Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality provides 3.6 kW of onboard power to charge or operate devices — from laptops to camping gear.

Stay Mode lets occupants use the infotainment and climate systems while stationary, powered by the hybrid battery with the engine off — ideal for school pick-ups, events, or road-trip stops.

Cabin convenience extends to six 100 W USB-C ports, a rear camera cleaning system, UV-C sterilised console, Digital Centre Mirror, and a 14-speaker BOSE premium audio system tuned for rich, immersive sound.

Hyundai’s latest Connected Car Navigation Cockpit (ccNC) introduces advanced infotainment with biometric recognition, voice control, and Over-The-Air (OTA) updates now covering up to 42 vehicle features, ensuring Palisade evolves long after delivery.

Conclusion

Blending bold design, serene comfort, and cutting-edge hybrid technology, the all-new Hyundai Palisade Hybrid sets a new benchmark for large-SUV refinement. It delivers genuine electric-like driving experiences without compromise — engineered for the realities of Australian life.

With premium craftsmanship, intuitive technology, and an unwavering focus on safety, the new Palisade represents Hyundai’s confident step into the next generation of family mobility.

Farewell to Godzilla

The R35 GT-R — a car that shattered expectations, rewrote performance benchmarks, and became a legend in its own right — has reached the end of its production run. After 18 years, Nissan has officially built the final R35 at its Tochigi plant in Japan, closing the chapter on one of the most important performance cars of the modern era.

A Final Midnight Purple Tribute

Since its launch in 2007, the R35 GT-R has stood as a symbol of relentless innovation and unflinching performance. Approximately 48,000 units were produced across nearly two decades. The last car to leave the line? A Premium T-Spec finished in the iconic Midnight Purple, destined for a customer in Japan — a fitting send-off in the model’s homeland.

Evolution Without Compromise

Unlike many cars that receive one or two major facelifts, the R35’s story was one of constant evolution. Each model year saw incremental refinements — more power, sharper control, enhanced comfort, or in the case of the fearsome NISMO variants, race-bred performance.

At the heart of it all sat the VR38DETT twin-turbo V6, paired with the famed ATTESA ET-S all-wheel-drive system. Over time, output grew from the original 353 kW (480 PS) at launch to 419 kW (570 PS) from 2017 onwards. For the NISMO models, GT3 racecar-spec turbochargers and precision-balanced internals pushed things further, unleashing a staggering 441 kW (600 PS).

Each of the 48,000 cars produced carried something special: an engine hand-built by one of Nissan’s legendary Takumi master craftsmen in Yokohama, with each builder’s name immortalized on a plaque fixed to the engine itself.

Motorsports Royalty

On track, the GT-R lived up to its fearsome reputation:

  • SUPER GT dominance with five GT500 class and three GT300 class wins.

  • Victory at the 2013 Blancpain GT Pro-Am class.

  • Bathurst 12 Hour winner (2015).

  • Five-time champion in Japan’s Super Taikyu endurance series.

It wasn’t just about trophies — it was about proving Godzilla’s DNA in the heat of competition.

Nürburgring Conqueror

The R35’s legend is incomplete without its Nürburgring story. In 2007, it stunned the world with a 7:38 lap — already blistering. By 2008, chief test driver Toshio Suzuki smashed the 7:30 barrier, clocking 7:29 in a base-spec car.

Nissan kept coming back. In 2013, with Michael Krumm at the wheel of a GT-R NISMO equipped with track options, the R35 set its fastest ever lap at 7:08.679 — proof of Nissan’s obsession with constant improvement.

Closer to home, the GT-R NISMO also rewrote records at Tsukuba Circuit, setting a blistering 59.078 seconds in 2024 — still one of the fastest times ever for a road car.

Records Beyond the Track

The R35 even carved its name into the Guinness World Records. In 2016, a specially tuned MY16 GT-R set the record for the fastest drift ever recorded — sliding sideways at 304.96 km/h in the UAE.

A Legacy That Lives On

Ivan Espinosa, Nissan’s President and CEO, summed it up:

“After 18 remarkable years, the R35 GT-R has left an enduring mark on automotive history. Its legacy is a testament to the passion of our team and the loyalty of our customers around the globe. To the many fans of the GT-R worldwide, I want to tell you this isn’t a goodbye to the GT-R forever — it’s our goal for the GT-R nameplate to one day make a return.”

The End of the R35, Not the GT-R

The R35 GT-R departs with its reputation intact: a car that humbled supercars, thrilled owners, and inspired a generation. But this isn’t the end of GT-R. Nissan has already confirmed the badge will live on — reimagined, reinvented, and ready for the future.

Until then, the R35 remains what it has always been: a symbol of Japanese engineering passion, a motorsport warrior, and the people’s supercar that earned the name “Godzilla.

Isuzu MU-X range sets new sales benchmark

Isuzu UTE Australia (IUA) is celebrating a milestone quarter, with the 25MY MU-X achieving record-breaking sales since its arrival in March 2025. The facelifted 7-seat SUV has resonated strongly with Australian buyers, cementing its reputation as a capable, versatile, and family-focused choice in the large SUV segment.

After finishing 2024 as Australia’s 6th best-selling 4x4 overall – and the 3rd best-selling vehicle in the “SUV Large < $80K” segment – MU-X momentum has accelerated in 2025. With stock of the outgoing 24MY limited early in the year, the arrival of the updated 25MY MU-X has sparked unprecedented demand.

Record-Breaking Sales Performance

The launch of the 25MY MU-X has delivered a surge of sales across the IUA Dealer Network:

  • 1,643 units delivered in May

  • 2,033 units in June – an all-time monthly record

  • 1,635 units in July

Together, these figures mark the first time Isuzu UTE has delivered more than 5,000 MU-X vehicles in any three-month period – with a total of 5,311 units between May and July 2025.

Demand for the flagship MU-X X-TERRAIN has been particularly strong, reflecting Australian buyers’ appetite for premium comfort paired with genuine off-road capability.

Strong Demand Across Australia

“With its effortless combination of capability, value, and versatility, our ambition was for the new MU-X to be well received,” said Mr Junta Matsui, Managing Director of Isuzu UTE Australia. “These results confirm just how strongly Isuzu UTE’s all-purpose SUV resonates with a broad cross section of Australians.”

“With spring approaching and school holidays almost upon us, IUA is determined to help more families unlock the best of the Australian lifestyle. From the Red Centre to the school run, MU-X delivers both reliability and refinement in a genuine go-anywhere, do-anything vehicle.”

Building on a Strong Foundation

In 2024, Isuzu UTE delivered 17,978 MU-X vehicles, making it Australia’s 15th best-selling vehicle overall. Current demand suggests that 2025 could surpass this record, pending supply volumes.

To meet this growing demand, IUA has been working closely with Isuzu internationally to increase MU-X production for the Australian market, with additional stock confirmed from September.

Ownership Made Simple

The introduction of Isuzu UTE Finance and Isuzu UTE Insurance earlier this year further simplifies the customer journey, offering buyers convenient and competitive solutions available through the national Dealer Network.

Availability

Customers are encouraged to place orders with their local Isuzu UTE Dealers now to secure delivery from incoming September stock.

Honda Prelude Set for Australian Comeback

The Legend Returns: Honda Prelude Set for Australian Comeback in 2026

Honda has officially confirmed that the iconic Prelude nameplate will return to Australian roads in mid-2026, marking a bold new chapter for the brand and a powerful nod to one of its most celebrated nameplates.

“We’re thrilled to add this iconic nameplate to the Honda line-up next year,” said Robert Thorp, Director of Automotive at Honda Australia. “Prelude taps into a rare combination of nostalgia and performance with broad appeal across generations of Honda customers, old and new.”

First unveiled globally with a 2025 launch date, the all-new Prelude is positioned as a “specialty sports” hybrid coupe, fusing Honda’s next-gen e:HEV hybrid tech with the kind of driving joy and emotional connection that defined the original.

A Prelude to Electrified Excitement

Inspired by the graceful motion of a glider, the new Prelude has been built around a core design philosophy dubbed “Unlimited Glide” — a concept that blends dynamic performance with smooth, flowing motion. The goal? To create a vehicle that’s both exhilarating and effortless, offering everyday usability with the heart of a true sports coupe.

Honda promises that this sixth-generation model will retain the brand’s signature “joy of driving,” but reimagined for the electrified era, prioritising precision handling, responsive performance, and low environmental impact.

Design: Low, Sleek, and Purposeful

Visually, the Prelude stays true to its roots with a low-slung profile, a sharply sculpted nose, and a wide, confident stance. Flush door handles, glider-inspired headlights, and black chrome accents on the grille all add to the sense of sophistication and aerodynamics.

Inside, the cabin takes the glide theme further with a “Blue × White” motif that brings a calming, high-tech feel. The driver-focused cockpit features a D-shaped steering wheel, sporty seats with extra bolstering, and a full-graphic meter exclusive to Prelude. Front passenger comfort hasn’t been forgotten either, with a more relaxed, enveloping seat designed for long-haul serenity.

Detailed touches like an ivory-textured instrument panel reminiscent of Japanese paper, and embroidered Prelude badging, underline Honda’s attention to craftsmanship and ownership pride.

Form Meets Function

While the Prelude is very much a driver’s car, Honda hasn’t forgotten practicality. The low-slung coupe manages to deliver genuine usability thanks to a tailgate-style boot with a wide opening, a clever underfloor storage space, and folding rear seats for added versatility. Hooks for grocery bags? They’re in there too.

It’s a coupe that knows life doesn’t pause between Sunday morning sprints and weekday errands, and it’s engineered to handle both.

A Name That Mattered — And Still Does

From 1978 to the early 2000s, the Prelude carved out a name for itself as a forward-thinking, tech-laden front-wheel-drive sports coupe. From pioneering Japan’s first in-car electric sunroof to introducing four-wheel steering and early ABS, it was always a few steps ahead of its time.

Now, 24 years since the last generation rolled off the production line, the Prelude returns as a hybrid, proudly stepping into a new electrified era, without forgetting where it came from.

GWM Goes All-In on Local Tuning

In a bold step forward for GWM’s presence in Australia and New Zealand, the brand has officially secured permanent residency at the iconic Lang Lang Proving Ground (LLPG) in Victoria, a facility long known as the birthplace of some of Australia’s most legendary cars.

This move signals more than just local investment. It marks a significant milestone in GWM’s mission to deliver vehicles that are not only globally competitive, but finely tuned for the unique conditions, expectations, and driving styles of Aussie and Kiwi drivers.

The Lang Lang facility, once home to Holden’s legendary vehicle development, will now become the central hub for GWM’s localisation strategy. With full-time access to the track, GWM becomes the only OEM with such a privilege, setting the stage for serious gains in local ride and handling development, full-vehicle integration, and precision tuning across its growing range.

This announcement follows GWM’s recent appointment of respected Australian engineer Rob Trubiani, who brings over 25 years of development experience to the role. Rob knows Lang Lang better than most, having spent much of his career shaping vehicles for local roads at the very same proving ground.

“Lang Lang is one of the best proving grounds in the world,” said Trubiani. “To be back here, using my experience to develop vehicles specifically for Australian and New Zealand drivers, is a dream come true. This track lets us push dynamics to the edge, so we can identify exactly where we can optimise — not just tweak — our vehicles. It’s all about delivering that confidence, control and comfort drivers expect from a car built for this part of the world.”

John Kett, GWM COO ANZ, called the move “a statement of intent.”

“When Rob presented the idea of making Lang Lang our local engineering home, the support was unanimous. With full-time access now secured and the right talent in place, we’re confident this investment will lead to better products, tailored specifically for our market.”

The long-term residency gives GWM the ability to fast-track development and apply deeper scrutiny in real-world local conditions. According to the brand, the first fruits of this strategy will soon be revealed under the internal codename “AT1” — a program set to highlight ride and handling improvements shaped by direct customer and media feedback.

Beyond that, Trubiani’s influence is already stretching further, with his work expected to help shape global programs destined for ANZ from the ground up, not just reworked after the fact.

GWM’s message is clear: this isn’t about box-ticking local compliance. This is about building cars that feel right from the moment your hands touch the wheel, cars built by locals, for locals.

He adds that even the entry-level Life variant features tech and safety that’s often optional elsewhere, wrapped in a cabin that echoes the premium vibe of Touareg and Tiguan.

“Our goal is for the Tayron to surprise and delight — it’s bigger, more refined, and more attainable than you’d expect.”
