All-New 2026 Mazda CX-5 Breaks Cover

Mazda has officially pulled the wraps off the all-new 2026 CX-5, the third generation of one of its most successful nameplates — and one of Australia’s favourite SUVs.

Since its global debut in 2012, the CX-5 has embodied everything core to Mazda’s identity: Kodo design, SkyActiv efficiency, and an everyday focus on driver engagement. With more than 4.5 million units sold worldwide — and over 316,000 of them delivered to Australian buyers — the CX-5 has long stood as a benchmark for midsize SUVs.

Now, for 2026, it’s evolved — and it’s bigger, more refined, and smarter than ever before.

Kodo Design, Reimagined

Mazda’s latest evolution of Kodo design debuts with the CX-5’s new “Wearable Gear” design concept — a blend of urban sophistication and outdoor readiness, inspired by functional, form-fitting gear.

Visually, the 2026 CX-5 remains familiar but now features:

  • A wider, more chiselled front fascia

  • Sharper angular LED lighting

  • The signature Mazda Wing grille

  • Tail lights inspired by the larger CX-70 and CX-90

  • Bold “MAZDA” script across the tailgate

Size-wise, it’s now 115mm longer, with the same increase in wheelbase, and 15mm wider, giving it a more confident, planted stance while improving cabin space across all rows.

Designers also took cues from “Kigumi,” a traditional Japanese architectural technique that relies on seamless wood joinery — evident where the bodywork meets the wing trim for a more sculptural and precise finish.

A Cabin Built Around Comfort and Calm

Step inside and you’ll find a cabin that’s been completely rethought — uncluttered, spacious, and purposefully serene.

Key updates include:

  • Larger door openings for easier access, especially when loading kids or car seats

  • More rear legroom, knee room, and headroom

  • An optional panoramic sunroof to brighten long journeys

  • A larger rear cargo area, now 50mm longer and 25mm taller, with a lower loading height for easier usability

Mazda’s meticulous craftsmanship is everywhere — from refined materials and soft-touch surfaces to new ambient lighting that adds warmth without distraction. The overall experience is intentionally calming, while still feeling premium and modern.

Tech That Makes Sense

Dominating the dashboard is Mazda’s largest-ever display — a 15.6-inch touchscreen, fully integrated and tuned for intuitive operation. It features smartphone-style controls, customisable home screens, and seamless access to navigation, media, and settings. It’s designed to be effortless and familiar, not overwhelming.

Confidence Behind the Wheel

The 2026 CX-5 stays true to Mazda’s dynamic DNA. A 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G four-cylinder returns as the launch engine, making 132kW and 242Nm, paired with a 6-speed auto and i-Activ AWD as standard. It’s been recalibrated for smoother torque delivery, sharper response, and quieter operation depending on the drive.

Mazda also promises a hybrid powertrain, which will be confirmed for the Australian market at a later stage.

On the safety front, the CX-5 gains a fresh suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), including new-generation features designed to further boost driver confidence and occupant protection.

Final Word

The 2026 Mazda CX-5 represents a meaningful leap forward for a nameplate that already sits at the top of the class. It’s more spacious, more refined, and smarter to use, while continuing to deliver the craftsmanship, engagement, and quiet confidence Mazda fans expect.

Australian launch is scheduled for 2026, with further powertrain and trim details to follow.
